Computer Description

The library has twenty four public workstations. Twenty two of these are Internet-ready and have Microsoft Office XP. Other software products are available as well. Printing is available on these machines.

The remaining two are unrestricted workstations, meaning users can install their own software and access the core operating system. Printing is not available on the unrestricted machines.

You must check out a workstation at the circulation desk prior to use. Read the complete computer use policy for restrictions and suggestions on the use of all these workstations.

The library also has three dedicated OPAC (online public access catalog) workstations. These provide access to our online catalog. Printing is available on these machines as well.

Software

Standard Workstations

The standard library workstations run Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional and provides access to the following software:

In addition, the user has access to a range of helper applications such as Adobe Reader 6.0, Form Flow, ICS Viewer, QuickTime PictureViewer, RealPlayer, and Windows Media Player.

All of the online databases are accessible from these workstations as well.

Unrestricted Workstations

One of our unlimited workstations has the ability to scan and has a CD writer. The other unrestricted workstation does not have any software beyond the core operating system, the standard Windows programs, and a few helper applications. Users are free to install their own software products.

Printing

The library's public computers are networked to a single printer. In order to print any document, you will need to follow these instructions. The library staff strongly recommends that you have your printed copies in hand before closing your work.

Before you begin, observe the lower right hand corner of the screen. You should see among the icons three letters "OCS". If this icon is absent, it indicates that the computer is not on the print network and all print functions will be inoperable. Inform a member of the library staff if the icon is not present.

Printing from the workstation
  1. Open the File menu on the menu bar. Click on Print. The next screen will allow you to select how many pages of the document to print, number of copies, and to which printer you will send your document. You must use this option if you require anything other than one print of the entire document. Click OK once you are satisfied with your choices. If you are printing from Adobe Acrobat Reader (a .pdf file), be sure to use the Acrobat Reader menu to print. You may see the Reader program overlaid onto the web browser. Using the browser toolbar to print in this situation will typically result in a blank page being printed.
  2. Wait several seconds. A flashing screen will appear in the upper right hand corner of the screen. It will read "Accessing . . . Please Wait".
  3. The Print to Vend Station screen will appear. This repeats the number of pages and total cost. You may password protect the document here. Go to the Name setting and enter a different name if you so choose. Go to the Password setting and enter a password. Retype the password for verification. The document can be printed by anyone at the Print Station unless you password protect it. Changing the name and password protecting the document are both optional steps. Once you are satisfied with the settings, click Send to Vend Station to send the job to the vend station. You may also choose to cancel the job here.
  4. The print job has been sent to the print station at this point. Proceed to the print station to pay for the job and receive the actual hardcopy printout.
Using the Print Station

The print station is located opposite the circulation desk and adjacent to the online public access catalogs (OPACs).

  1. There are three columns on the print interface.
  2. If you do not see your print job on the screen immediately, click the Refresh button. If your print job still does not appear, wait a minute and try again. If it still does not appear, return to your workstation and resend the job.
  3. There may be more than one print job waiting. Highlight your print job and click Print.
  4. The Vend screen will show the number of pages to be printed and the total cost. The Print button will initially be greyed out. Insert the necessary funds. Once the correct amount has been inserted, the Print button will become active. Click on Print. The printer will start and any change in excess of the cost will eject. Your print job will be automatically deleted after the print has completed.
Additional Information

There is a change machine located next to the OPAC computers which will change $1 and $5 bills. The library does not have a change box and cannot change larger bills.

The Print Station will keep your job for three hours before deleting it automatically.

We strongly recommend that you have your printing in hand before closing out your work at the workstation. Print jobs have been known to disappear into the cyberspace between workstation and print station.
